When you choose kitchen countertops you will be selecting the items that you will use and look at more than any other aspect of your kitchen and this makes them very important. At the same time though these are also the parts of your kitchen where the most food is going to come into contact with and this makes it highly important that you take the time to keep them clean and to choose them carefully.
Part of the reason this is so important is that kitchen countertops will inevitably come into contact with a lot of germs and bacteria. This will happen when you sneeze or when you cough and that bacteria can then survive on the surface until you place the food down on it for it to climb onto. That means you can reinfect yourself with colds and other illnesses and can spread it through your family which are of course important considerations.
At the same time though even if you don't have a cold or anything you can still spread bacteria onto the surface and many viruses exist on these surfaces that are a lot more harmful potentially. For instance this includes things like the staphylococcus virus which is partly reponsible. This staphylococcus bacteria is the same bacteria that causes the hospital 'super virus' and it can of course cause a lot of serious problems. The shocking news is that it exists on the skin of 30% of healthy adults and that means that anyone – who isn't necessary ill – can spread it onto your food if you don't keep your kitchen countertops as sterile as possible.
Now choosing the correct kitchen countertops is a large part of keeping your surfaces as free of bacteria as possible and there are many reasons for this. One obvious reason is that granite countertops or marble countertops are non porous and are good insulators. This means that there are few crevices for the bacteria to exist in, and also that the stone is generally cold – which is less conducive for bacteria swarming and multiplying.
At the same time though the fact that the surface is so smooth and solid also means it's very easy to keep clean and tidy. You can clean your granite countertops or marble countertops simply by wiping a wet cloth across the surface and this will clear everything off of it, while other more absorbent and porous surfaces require more scrubbing and you can still miss bits of food or bits of bacteria. We often consider stones to be 'dirty' because we find them outside covered in mud and dirt, but the reality is that they are actually much cleaner than many alternatives.
Despite all this though it's still important to take time and effort to clean your surfaces thoroughly. To do this make sure that you spray the surface with some kind of antibacterial spray, and do so every time you clear up after cooking. Try and keep the surface mostly clear where possible to make it easier to wipe down without things getting in the way.
