Choosing countertops for your kitchen

Countertops for your kitchen have the most thrown at them, often literally, of anything in your kitchen and may well be the part of your kitchen that if you make the wrong choice will make it look old and tatty quickly.

Often people will add a new countertop to a kitchen without replacing anything else as it is the only thing damaged, in other cases you may be planning a whole new kitchen including a counter top. In either case you have choices and when you are redoing an entire kitchen you may well want to start with your choice of countertop. A well-chosen countertop will mean your kitchen lasts and that it looks great as countertops often dominate kitchens: being on several walls and on a central console in many cases.

Cupboards and even floors may well not affect how you go about cooking and preparing food while your countertop will: you may want to be able to be messy, cut on to the counter and drip food on to it without worrying. Maybe this isn’t you though and you want a countertop that will be easy to clean and hygienic so this may be more of a consideration as far and you are concerned.

Wooden countertops have some issues though people still choose them, often because they look nice and fit in, they are also quite good value compared to some cheaper countertops.

Wooden tops may well be varnished and made of hard woods, still though the varnish will wear away and cuts and marks will soon appear: a wooden countertop may gain character but it wont stay looking new for long. A wooden countertop is also difficult to clean as it is porous and all those cuts and marks will harbor germs as well.

Stone countertops by contrast are very easy to wipe and this is especially true of Marble and Granite. Granite when polished will not get scratched or marked at all and the surface is non porous so that you really just need to wipe. You wont need to use anti bacterial cleaners and other cleaners with granite which ideally you don’t want in your kitchen anyway as they can taint food and also help breed superbugs.

Marble is a material almost as durable as granite though it does react with acid and then quartz is still very durable but a little less durable again. These three stones are fantastic looking as well, they are close enough in durability that from them you may well want to choose that which you like the look of the most. Granite has fantastic deep colors with quartz shining from within. Marble has a slight translucence and deep patterns and quartz is often very translucent and its look is something you will rarely see in a kitchen. The reason you rarely see quartz in a kitchen is however its price as large pieces are rare. Granite is also expensive because it is so difficult to cut. Marble may be the best value overall.

As for cheaper countertops they may seem like a bargain at much lower prices but are they good value? Plastic covered MDF tops don’t look fantastic to begin with and can get damaged: often less by knives and dropping heavy objects but more by burn marks. Hot pans can melt all but the very best plastic covered countertops and this is bound to happen sooner or later.
